What to Order at Luma Coffee
Any latte is an excellent choice. I particularly enjoyed the Honey Cinnamon Latte. I was able to get a real sense of the flavor of the espresso with just a hint of honey.
The seasonal Naughty Latte served around Christmas time is an interesting specialty drink option as well. It is a tiramisu-flavored latte (vanilla and cocoa) served with mascarpone whipped cream, dusted with cocoa, and a lady’s finger.
The mascarpone whipped cream in the Naughty Late is what threw me off. I wasn’t expecting the amount of texture that this element added to the drink. Not to mention flavors made it tough for me to get an idea of the essence of the espresso.
The Coffee
The coffee at Luma tastes vibrant and smooth. The levels of flavor that come out in the roast deliver an excellent and varied experience to the palate. Again, I don’t know much about the process of coffee roasting. I can only imagine the care that goes into these in-house roasts.
With the Honey Cinnamon latte, I enjoyed that the flavors didn’t overpower the actual espresso. This latte was one of the most layered flavors I’ve ever had. I highly recommend it.
Fun tip: always toss the dice next to the register for the chance to win a free coffee.
Luma Coffee Menu
You can expect to find a list of old faithful items on the menu. Luma coffee has cortados, lattes, and cappuccinos, both hot and iced. And there’s always a selection of rotating specialty drinks, depending on the season.
Food Options at Luma Coffee
The food options at Luma coffee are pretty standard for a cafe. Customers can enjoy breakfast toasts, premade vegan overnight oats, or a selection of assorted baked goods for breakfast.
For lunch until close, Luma serves a panini-style turkey sandwich and a chicken salad sandwich. And for a different mood, Luma also a little caesar salad or a decked-out charcuterie board.
Luma Coffee Vibe and Seating
The interior design at Luma Coffee feels warm and inviting despite the extremely spacious 20’ ceilings (give or take). The space has been built out with thoughtful wood accents that brings warmth to the large interior. And there is plenty of seating for the many guests that file through the shop at all hours.
On entering Luma Coffee, guests are greeted by a spacious entryway with the main barista bar and kitchen straight ahead. There’s a roped-off coffee roasting corner to the right of the entrance set out on display in the paned front display area.
To the left, is a vintage couch and green chair for a homey living room-style seating area. The remaining tables line the main wall all the way to the edge of the stairs that lead to an overflow section of seating in a loft set up.
From this loft, guests can easily knock out a study session, or remote work session, or enjoy a demure date of coffee and easy people-watching. This setup makes for a very nice accommodating layout that works for a multitude of parties.
Remote Work at Luma Coffee
The overflow loft offers lots of seating that is set apart from the main hustle and bustle of the downstairs section. It is an excellent space for a couple of hours of work.
And for the South Eastern Students (Luma is only a 3-minute drive from campus), there’s plenty of study space and even a complimentary printer.
Luma Coffee’s Story
Luma Coffee was founded by two couples who began experimenting with roasting green coffee beans on their stovetop in a popcorn machine.
The flavor they experienced from those home-roasted beans was far superior to anything they had ever tasted. From that point, the two couples have worked to understand coffee on a deeper level, expanding their education on the process and art of roasting coffee that conforms to the benchmarks of specialty roasting.
Part owner, Devin, has since earned a Professional Level Coffee Skills Diploma from the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and Logan, another part owner, has earned credits in the same program.
This journey began in 2015 and led the two couples to finally establish the brick and mortar location in the fall of 2020.
The heart behind the mission of Luma Coffee Roasters is a passion for delivering excellent specialty coffee and a desire to elevate the coffee scene in Hammond by serving a top-notch product to the community in a dynamic coffee shop.
The few times I’ve visited, Luma Coffee is filled with people spending quality time together or students knocking out a much-needed study session. And there always seems to be someone who runs into a friend or neighbor while there. I’d say Luma has succeeded in its mission of serving its community.
