A Quick Word on Hotspots
Before we get into it, first, a quick word on hotspots.
A hotspot is a portable device that can offer other devices like cell phones and laptops secure and reliable internet. Think of a hotspot like a portable router/modem combo that provides wifi like your home Wi-Fi setup.
If you own a phone, you likely have access to a hotspot right now. Most cell phone data plans allow at least a few gigs of hotspot data per month.
Some reasons you may need a hotspot include:
- Traveling abroad and needing access to Google Maps while in transit
- Secure internet access for remote work
- Remote camping trip where you need access to wifi
Personally, I have used the Solis Lite hotspot to work out of a vehicle while traveling. I can’t speak to more remote uses like out of the country or on a camping trip.
Solis Lite Pricing and Data Plans
You can buy a Solis Lite hotspot for $149, but be sure to check current listings as prices fluctuate. This price point is certainly on the lower side of the hotspot world but is comparable to most 4G hotspots on the market. Meanwhile, other more robust hotpots like the Solis 5G Hotspot can cost upwards of $399.
As for data plans, you can purchase 1G of data for $6 in the Solis app. For additional data plan options, visit the Solis Wifi website. Plans range from pay-as-you-go data to 1-month unlimited data that includes 100G of data that slows down after the quota is met.
Solis Lite Aesthetic and Specs
The Solis Lite Hotspot has a small profile with a loud presence. The iconic iridescent orange makes this little Wi-Fi dome very easy to spot, while the less than one-inch height makes for an easy-to-tote profile.
The exterior design is sleek and easy to manage. There’s a power light stripe down the center of the device that displays battery life and shows when the hotspot is turned on. At the bottom of the light strip is a small discrete power button.
The power port is a USB-C connection tucked away on the side of the hotspot. The top profile includes three small lights on the opposite side indicating wifi, data transfer, and cellular signal.
Solit Lite Setup
To set up your Solis Lite hotspot, simply charge her up with the included USB-C power cord, wait for the three indicator lights to stop blinking, power her up, and link the hotspot to the Solis Lite app.
Pair your hotspot with the app using the password on the hotspot or scan the QR code on the bottom of the hotspot. Your Solis Lite should come pre-downloaded with 1G of data.
Battery Life
The Solis Lite battery life is one of the best in the game. Especially at this price point and the device only being around 245 grams. The battery can last up to 12 hours with multiple devices connected to it.
Charging the battery can be somewhat of a pain, however. The default power cord that comes with the hotspot is very short, which limits reach.
Network Connectivity
One of the main selling points of the Solis Hotspot is the advanced network scanning feature. This feature means the hotspot scans the area for the strongest network or cell tower and uses that connection to deliver the strongest available Wi-Fi connection for users.
This perk is a major selling point as some hotspots require users to scan networks manually. After using the Solis Hotspot for almost an entire workday while traveling cross country in a car, I can report that hotspot connectivity functioned 95% of the time, with the other 5% lacking connectivity while we were passing through a very rural area.
Conclusion
The bottom line is, that the Solis Lite hotspot is a good investment for having a pocket-sized wifi source. I’d recommend picking one up only if your remote work schedule brings you out of the country and takes you to a remote place without available wifi.
The Solis Hotspot is known for being the nomad’s friend boasting connectivity in over 135 countries.
